What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, sometimes called tummy tuck, is a procedure that can remove excess skin and tighten the muscles in the abdomen. Through an incision, Dr. Roussel can suture stretched and separated abdominal muscles and remove sagging skin from the lower abdomen. A tummy tuck can also remove stubborn fat located on the abdomen, creating an overall more toned, contoured look to the stomach.

Abdominoplasty Candidates
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are patients who have stretched skin and muscles that negatively impact the look and function of their lower abdomen. Many tummy tuck patients underwent events like pregnancy or weight loss that left behind significant stretched tissue. In order to be considered a good candidate for abdominoplasty, you should be in overall good health and at a healthy and stable weight. Further weight fluctuations or pregnancies can impact your results and possibly require another procedure, so Dr. Roussel will help you determine if it’s the right time to pursue abdominoplasty. During your consultation, Dr. Roussel will also thoroughly examine your medical history and abdomen to begin formulating a surgical plan based on your goals.
The tummy tuck is often combined with other procedures like breast augmentation (a procedure called a mommy makeover) or liposuction to further contour the area and remove fat. Dr. Roussel will give you a professional recommendation on the best procedures to combine with your tummy tuck where applicable.
Abdominoplasty Procedure Steps
A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Roussel will begin the procedure by creating an incision across the pelvic region within the natural contours of the stomach. Through this incision, the underlying muscles can be sutured into their natural position and any stubborn fat can be removed. Then, excess skin will be trimmed away and the incisions will be closed. Once complete, you will be made ready for your recovery.
2-3 Weeks
Abdominoplasty Results and Recovery
The tummy tuck requires 1-2 weeks of dedicated recovery. During this time, you should avoid intensive activity as well as motions that would put strain on your abdomen. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed instructions on following up, reporting complications, and managing swelling. Some of the most important aftercare steps include avoiding laying on your stomach, avoiding heavy lifting, and wearing your compression garment as much as possible.
Although swelling will begin to subside within 2-3 weeks, it may take several more weeks for any residual swelling to subside. Within 2-3 weeks, you can begin to see your results emerge, with a slimmer, more defined look to your stomach. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, a tummy tuck can last for many decades.
