What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, sometimes called brachioplasty, is a procedure that removes sagging skin and stubborn fat from the upper arms. It can remove what are sometimes called “wings” of fat and skin from the upper arms. Through an incision, Dr. Roussel can create a tighter and more toned appearance to the arms, especially when lifting them up.

Arm Lift Candidates

The best candidates for an arm lift are patients who are bothered by the appearance of stretched or sagging tissue on their upper arms. Many arm lift patients have experienced weight fluctuations that left behind stubborn fat or lax skin – when wearing certain clothing, these concerns may become very visible. In order to be considered a good candidate for an arm lift, you should be at a healthy and stable weight as well as in overall good health. If you still have weight to lose or may experience weight fluctuations in the future, these things can impact the longevity of your results. Dr. Roussel will perform an examination and thoroughly discuss your medical history to help you determine if the arm lift is the best option for your cosmetic goals.

The arm lift can be performed on its own but may be combined with other body contouring procedures like the tummy tuck or body lift. Liposuction is often added to the arm lift to further contour the area and remove stubborn fat. Dr. Roussel will provide a professional recommendation on the best possible surgical plan for your needs.

Arm Lift Procedure Steps

An arm lift is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Roussel will perform an incision along each arm or within each armpit depending on your unique surgical plan. Once the incisions are made, Dr. Roussel will excise stretched skin and remove stubborn fat. Once complete, the incisions will be closed and you will be sent home for your recovery.

Arm Lift Results and Recovery

Arm lift recovery can take 1-2 weeks. During this time, you should plan to rest and avoid intensive activities, as well as lifting or straining your arms. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed aftercare instructions regarding following up, managing swelling, and reporting any complications. Other important instructions will include wearing compression sleeves, avoiding lifting or moving heavy objects, and sleeping with your arms elevated on some pillows.

It may take 2-3 weeks for most swelling to subside. Residual swelling may take an additional few weeks, but by this time you should begin to see improvement in your arms’ overall definition and appearance. When performed by a knowledgeable plastic surgeon such as Dr. Roussel, an arm lift can last for many years.
