What is Facial Fat Transfer?
Facial fat transfer is a combination procedure that uses autologous fat to enhance the face. As the face ages, it begins to lose volume. This can contribute to a thin or sagging appearance in the mid-face. Facial fat transfer uses your own fatty tissue from another area of the body to restore youthful volume to the face. When performed by a knowledgeable plastic surgeon, facial fat transfer can be a more permanent solution than dermal fillers.

Facial Fat Transfer Candidates
To be considered a good candidate for facial fat transfer, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover afterward. One of the most important considerations for facial fat transfer is whether you have enough fatty tissue in another area of the body. If you don’t have enough fatty tissue, Dr. Roussel can help you explore other options. Dr. Roussel will perform an examination and discuss whether facial fat transfer is best for you during a consultation.
Facial fat transfer can be an excellent facial rejuvenation procedure when combined with other options like a facelift. Dr. Roussel will help you explore all possible options for your cosmetic goals and help you carefully select the right procedures.
Facial Fat Transfer Procedure Steps
Facial fat transfer can sometimes be performed using local anesthesia. To begin, Dr. Roussel will create small entry points in your donor area and collect fat using liposuction. Once the fat is collected, it will be purified and prepared. Dr. Roussel will then carefully inject the fat into areas like the cheeks, lips, or around the mouth. After Dr. Roussel has achieved your ideal look, you’ll be made ready for your short recovery.
1-2 Weeks
Facial Fat Transfer Results and Recovery
Facial fat transfer typically takes 1-2 weeks away from work and intensive activity. Dr. Roussel will give you detailed aftercare instructions to follow during this time regarding caring for your incisions, managing swelling, preventing complications, and more. Most importantly, you will be asked to wear a compression garment on your donor sites to reduce swelling and help the skin adhere to the new contours. You should also take steps to keep your head elevated in order to minimize swelling.
You’ll see an almost immediate improvement in your facial aesthetics but it may take 2-3 weeks for all swelling to subside. You’ll enjoy more youthful facial volume that will last much longer than dermal fillers. If you maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, your results can last for many years.
