What is Mass Reduction?
Mass reduction is a reconstructive procedure that removes masses called lipomas. Lipomas are lumps of fatty tissue that grow under the skin – they can appear anywhere on the body but most commonly appear on the back, torso, arms, neck, or shoulders. Lipomas are not typically harmful but can require surgical removal by a qualified plastic surgeon.

Mass Reduction Candidates
The best candidates for mass removal are patients who are bothered by the occurrence of a lipoma and want it removed. Although lipomas are not usually dangerous to your health, many patients are bothered by their cosmetic appearance or experience irritation. In order to be considered a good candidate for lipoma removal, you should be in overall good health and able to spend a brief time in recovery. Dr. Roussel will carefully examine your medical history and your mass to determine the best surgical approach during a consultation.
Mass Reduction Procedure Steps
Mass removal can typically be performed using local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Dr. Roussel will help you select the right option ahead of your surgery. Lipomas can sometimes be removed using surgical excision where the growth is simply removed using incisions. In other cases, lipomas can be removed using liposuction. Once Dr. Roussel has removed or reduced the mass, the incisions will be closed, and you will be made ready for your brief recovery.
1-2 Weeks
Mass Reduction Results and Recovery
Recovery after lipoma removal is relatively brief and takes one week depending on the size and depth of the lipoma. During this time, you should focus on resting and avoiding elevating your heart rate with intensive activities. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed information on taking care of your incisions, managing swelling, reporting complications, and following up. Make sure to follow directions on caring for the incision sites and managing any drains that are placed.
Most swelling should subside within 2-3 weeks, at which point you will notice smoother skin and a noticeable reduction in the visibility of the lipoma. Skilled plastic surgeons such as Dr. Roussel are often the best experts to remove a lipoma since they can effectively reduce the chances of visible scarring and ensure a good cosmetic result for the long term.
