What is Congenital Breast Surgery?
Congenital breast condition surgery is a procedure designed to treat congenital conditions that cause the breasts to develop differently. It uses a variety of surgical techniques to create a more normal, symmetrical, or proportional look to the breasts if they are different in shape or size. Dr. Roussel can take a knowledgeable approach to breast surgery from both a reconstructive and cosmetic background.

Congenital Breast Condition Surgery Candidates
The best candidates for congenital breast condition surgery are patients who have developed noticeably asymmetrical breasts, breasts that are too large or small, or breasts that are tuberous or unusually shaped. Many patients feel self-conscious about the appearance of their breasts or experience difficulties finding clothing that fits. Both men and women may experience tuberous breasts, as it can occur in men who have gynecomastia. In order to be considered a good candidate for congenital breast condition surgery, you should be in overall good health and able to take time to recover from surgery. Dr. Roussel will perform a thorough examination and discuss your medical history to develop a surgical plan that fits your goals and needs.
Surgery for congenital conditions like tuberous breasts often involves the use of other breast surgical techniques or technologies. In many cases, implants are used to enhance the shape of the breasts. A breast lift or male breast reduction procedure may also be used. Many patients with congenital breast conditions opt for areola reduction. Dr. Roussel will help you explore all possible options to achieve a more natural and flattering look.
Congenital Breast Condition Surgery Procedure Steps
Congenital breast condition surgery is typically performed using general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Roussel will help you explore the possible surgical techniques available. This surgery typically involves incisions to place implants within the breast tissue as well as reduce the size of the areola or lift the breast tissue into a more upright, rounded position. Incisions may also be used to excise tissue and create a flatter look to the chest. Once Dr. Roussel completes your surgical plan, the incisions are closed, and you may return home.
1-2 Weeks
Congenital Breast Condition Surgery Results and Recovery
Recovery from congenital breast condition surgery can take 1-2 weeks. During this time, you should avoid intensive activities and focus on resting. Dr. Roussel will provide detailed information on managing swelling, caring for your incisions, and following up. You may be given a specialized surgical bra or compression garment to wear during this time – wear it as much as possible to help support healing. Make sure to also sleep on your back and in an elevated position.
Most swelling should subside within 2-3 weeks, but it may take several more weeks for your final results to become apparent. You’ll see noticeable improvement in the overall look of your breasts or chest by this time. When performed by a knowledgeable plastic and reconstructive surgeon, your results can last for the long term.
